I can’t actually can’t remember not knowing Alan, he’s just been across the road all my life. As a child he was ‘just’ my friend’s dad. Putting up so patiently with mine and Ruth’s latest money making antics- collecting worms and conkers to sell are two that stand out! Then there are odd memories that stay too, like the eclectic mix of paintings he borrowed from the library- these always fascinated me. But as an adult, Alan always encouraged me in my primary school teaching career and always managed to treat me as an adult neighbour which I really appreciated, he was interesting and interested. Alan was a lovely man and a good neighbour which, in a time where so many don’t know their neighbours, I have been very thankful for.
